I know the thought of starting a blog sounds scary. Trust me. I’m on blog number two and I feel more scared this time around.

When I first started my blog, it was over 10 years ago. Blogging was still relevantly new and what “blogging” actually meant was unknown to most… myself included.

I worked at a busy bar downtown and saw the unthinkable. Things you couldn’t makeup and I was looking for an outlet to share my crazy ass stories with people just so they could enjoy a good laugh as I did most nights I worked.

I did a little research, got my hosting paid for, and started my very first blog. It was super basic but full of good laughs.

I served a lot of the lawyers and government employees being in the downtown area and they would stop in on a regular basis just to let me know that my blog got them through the day. They knew if they were hitting a rough patch on their current case or just looking for a good laugh, my blog was the place to be.

I had zero filters and shared every juicy detail!! I wanted everyone to feel as if they were in my shoes and had lived the same experience as I had the previous night.

(Some of them even ended up becoming their clients as a result of going overboard and needing to be hauled away by the police.)

To this day, I regret stopping my blog. But the thing is… I had no clue how to make money on it. I used it as a channel to share my funny experiences as a bartender. That was it.

If I only knew then, what I know now… I could be rolling in the dough I’m sure.

I’m so glad I started this second blog. I’m doing it at a very different stage in my life though. I’m now a mother of two, someone with so much more knowledge on blogging and the drive to turn it into a business.

There are soooooo many benefits to blogging.

Be your own boss

You’re in charge of what it’s about and how you run it. You pick the name, the type of content that is posted, you create a business strategy you think will work best, and you decide exactly how it’s run.

It’s nice being the one in charge. Starting a blog allows you to make all your own decisions.

Just don’t be afraid to learn from others. There’s a wealth of knowledge to be learned about blogging and finding fellow bloggers to bounce things off of will be a game-changer.

Work When You Want

Are you sick of your 9-5?

Tired of missing the extracurricular activities your kids are involved in because your boss is making you work late?

Want to have more flexibility to make yourself more available to your family?

This gives you that.

I’m not saying you won’t have to work hard because I promise you this isn’t a cakewalk by any means, but you have the ability to work a less traditional schedule.

Maybe you work better early in the morning before everyone wakes up or maybe you’re like me, and just “go to town” on the keyboard once your kids fall asleep.

Regardless of the schedule you choose, you’re less likely to miss the important moments you’ve always wanted to be present for.

Let Your Creative Side Have an Outlet

This is your chance to do what you want with your blog. Are you interested in:

  • Fashion?
  • Makeup?
  • Travel?
  • Lifestyle?
  • Fitness?
  • Gardening?
  • Finance?
  • Parenting?

The topics and possibilities are endless and this creates the perfect channel for you to shine. It gives you the opportunity to share with the world what you know and what you’re passionate about.

Be sure to do your research though. You want to make sure that you are writing about something there is an audience for. If you don’t have an audience, what’s the point of starting a blog?

The end game is to make money and that isn’t going to be an option of the readers aren’t there.

Unlimited Income Possibilities

The beauty of blogging is there is no cap on your income. There are a variety of ways for you to make money and you’re going to get out of it exactly what you put in. I know that sounds like a cliché, but it’s true. Figure out what works and master it.

Once you do that, maybe you can learn to master another type of income stream. You ultimately control your income.

Meet New People

One thing I truly enjoy about this blogging venture I’m on is that I meet and talk to people from all over the world. It’s really cool!

I try to take the time to learn the different strategies they use, bounce ideas off of them, and simply get to know them.

I’ve gotten some great ideas recently from some women I’ve spoken to and I can’t wait to implement them into my business plan. Sometimes you have a great idea and a perfect stranger can help formulate it into something you can work with.

Blogging Can Be Very Therapeutic

As I stated earlier, my first blog was simply to share my experiences. It was an outlet for me that brought joy and laughter to many of my regulars.

I was able to get the craziness of my night off my chest and I enjoyed blogging for that reason alone. If this is you, making money can just be an added bonus.

If you’re really looking to monetize your blog, make sure you aren’t just doing it for yourself. You need to focus on what you think your readers want and you need to answer their questions and solve their problems.

Starting a blog can still be therapeutic but you need to consider the business side of it too. If you aren’t helping anyone, there is no reason for them to come to your blog.

Creates Opportunities

I think this point is pretty self-explanatory. Blogging can mean so many different things and can lead you in so many different directions.

A few of the opportunities blogging affords you:

  • freedom to travel
  • work the schedule you desire
  • endless income possibilities
  • more time with family
  • creative outlet

The beauty of blogging is it creates so many other avenues for your business as well.

Maybe you start out with a traditional website. That doesn’t mean that’s the rack you have to stay on. Blogging could lead you into:

  • vlogging
  • Instagram influencer
  • starting multiple blogs

Just for a couple of examples.
